Figure Legend. Comparison of uptake of colloidal gold-albumin by macrophages and
alveolar epithelial cells. This is a rabbit lung instilled with colloidal gold-albumin and fixed by
instillation after two hours. The labeled macrophage (m) is adjacent to the unlabeled
alveolar epithelium (e). In the macrophage, colloidal gold-albumin appeared in vesicles ,
endosomes and phagolysosomes (arrows). Gold-conjugated albumin particles were never
found in epithelial or endothelial cells, even at periods as long as eight hours after instillation
(data not shown). Final magnification was 32,000x.
